Peter Zumthor wins Pritzker Prize
:: BD

Swiss architect Peter Zumthor has won the 2009 Pritzker Prize, architecture's most prestigious award.

The $100,000 prize is awarded for a body of work, not a single building.

In the citation, the jury singled out three key Zumthor buildings, the Thermal Baths in Switzerland, the field Chapel to Saint Nikolaus von der Flüe and the Kolumba Museum, both near Cologne, Germany.

The latter museum, the jury heaped praise on calling it "a startling contemporary work, but also one that is completely at ease with its many layers of history.”
